Rural UK Gets Major Mobile Signal Upgrade! Tourists, hikers, and locals can now enjoy crackling 4G coverage across areas bigger than 66,000 football pitches. The UK Government has boosted mobile masts in the most remote spots, turning them into multi-network powerhouses.
Big Boost for Rural Mobile Coverage
Thanks to the Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme, over 50 existing mobile masts that once only handled EE or emergency 999 calls now support all major UK networks. That means reliable signals for everyone roaming the countryside or living off the beaten track.
Signal Hits Iconic Natural Hotspots
The upgrades cover key Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs) and National Parks, including:
- Snowdonia
- Lake District
- North York Moors
- Shropshire Hills
- Berwyn Mountains
- Brecon Beacons
- Clwydian Range and Dee Valley
- Parts of the Southern Upland Way
Safety & Tourism Get a Major Lift
This massive rollout means tourists can enjoy live updates, smooth route planning, and crucially, reliable emergency calls in areas that were once mobile blackspots. Local businesses and communities also stand to gain as digital inclusion acts as a turbocharger for rural economies.
Telecoms Minister Sir Chris Bryant said: “This is a major step forward in levelling up to unlock the potential of our rural regions.”
Wales Leads the Charge
Wales is the biggest winner, with improved coverage now reaching remote spots like Upper Chapel, Brecon Beacons, and the Clwydian Range. These upgrades finally plug longstanding signal gaps.
Ben Roome, CEO of Mova, added: “Thanks to collaboration between government and industry, 50 publicly funded sites are now delivering on the promise of rural connectivity. We’re closing the mobile coverage gap and helping communities thrive.”
What’s Next?
The government plans to upgrade another 50 sites across England, Wales, and Scotland by March 2026. The aim? Nationwide mobile coverage that leaves no remote area behind.
