Tragedy strikes Bilston as man dies and four hurt in twin house fires
Blazes Rip Through Neighbourhood in Early Hours
A man has died, and four others were rushed to hospital after two devastating fires tore through homes in Bilston, West Midlands, in the early hours of Saturday. The fires erupted almost back-to-back on Lunt Place and Marbury Drive, sparking a huge emergency response.
Firefighters from West Midlands Fire Service arrived at Lunt Place just three minutes after the first call at 2:19am, rescuing three people trapped on the first floor while a fourth escaped unaided. A third of the ground floor was engulfed in flames with thick smoke filling the semi-detached home.
Just 11 minutes later, at 2:30am, a second fire broke out at a detached house only 150 metres away on Marbury Drive. Tragically, a man in his 70s was found dead there. The house was described as “engulfed,” with the majority of the property destroyed.
Four Hospitalised, Not Life-Threatening
The four injured from the Lunt Place blaze were taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening, NHS England confirmed. Meanwhile, police and forensic teams have sealed off both scenes.
West Midlands Police said both blazes are being treated as potentially linked. The cause remains unknown.
“We are working closely with the fire service to determine the cause of both incidents. Anyone with information should contact us quoting log 379 of 10 May,” a police spokesperson said.

Community Left Reeling by Double Disaster
Locals expressed shock and horror at the near-simultaneous fires. One resident told social media:
“We heard a loud bang and within minutes the street was filled with blue lights. It’s terrifying when it’s so close to home.”
Another added:
“To have two fires within minutes so close together is just surreal.”
West Midlands Fire Service offered condolences:
“Very sadly, a man was confirmed to have died at one of the properties. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”
Fire Safety Back in Spotlight
This tragic event casts fresh attention on home fire safety across the region. West Midlands Fire Service has warned residents to remain vigilant over indoor heating and electrical faults. They urge households to have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms installed.
According to UK Fire Statistics, the West Midlands deals with hundreds of serious domestic fires annually and is ramping up prevention efforts.

The identity of the man who died in the Marbury Drive blaze has not been released. Tributes and community support are expected to follow in the coming days.
