Soldier Stabbed in Shocking Gillingham Attack
A man remains in custody after a serious assault on a soldier in Gillingham on Tuesday evening, July 23, 2024.
The attack happened at around 5.55pm in Sally Port Gardens. Police quickly responded to reports that a soldier in uniform, a man in his 40s, had suffered stab wounds.
Suspect Arrested at High Speed Chase
The victim was rushed to hospital with serious but stable injuries. Meanwhile, a 24-year-old local man fled the scene on a motorcycle but was caught by police around 6.30pm in Mooring Road, Rochester.
Officers have set up cordons at both locations and seized several knives connected to the case.
Police Statement and Investigation Underway
‘This was an upsetting incident for all concerned and our best wishes go to the victim, his family and those who witnessed the incident,’ said Acting Chief Superintendent Richard Woolley of Kent Police.
‘Residents will see a heightened police presence in Gillingham. We acted swiftly to detain the suspect and currently believe no one else was involved.
‘The motive is unclear but we’re investigating whether mental health issues played a role and are looking into connections between the location and the suspect.
‘There is no indication of any wider threat to the local community or armed forces members.’
