Jozef Puska Found Guilty of Ashling Murphy’s Murder
Jozef Puska, 33, a father of five from Slovakia, has been found guilty of murdering 23-year-old primary school teacher Ashling Murphy. The jury unanimously convicted Puska of the random stabbing attack that happened on January 12, 2022, as Ashling walked along the Grand Canal in Cappincur, Tullamore.
Judge Slams ‘Nonsense’ Defence, Praises Jury’s Quick Verdict
During the trial, the judge thanked the jury for swiftly rejecting Puska’s defence, calling it “nonsense” and ensuring justice was done. The courtroom was heavy with emotion, with Puska’s family visibly upset, while Ashling’s relatives found strength in each other’s support.
Mr Justice Hunt spoke directly to the court about the huge impact on Ashling’s family, who endured intense public attention throughout the case. He praised Ashling’s exceptional character, describing her as a shining light in the community.
Judge Labels Murder ‘Evil’ and Promises Tough Sentence
The judge said losing a child is “an unnatural tragedy” and stressed the family’s heartbreaking position. He made clear the crime was “evil” and told the jury he would consider victim impact statements before sentencing Puska.
Justice Hunt reminded the jury that murder carries a mandatory life sentence. He also reassured them they wouldn’t be called for jury duty again for at least 20 years, unless they volunteered.

As the jury exited, Ashling Murphy’s family applauded and held aloft a photo of their beloved daughter and sister, celebrating the verdict and showing their thanks.
Puska’s sentencing is set for November 17.
