Shock Impersonation Scam Surge Hits £177.6 Million Losses
Beware! Impersonation scams are on the rise, with a staggering 45,367 cases recorded in 2022 alone, costing Brits a whopping £177.6 million. As Take Five Week (17-21 April) kicks off, experts warn everyone to stay sharp and avoid falling victim to these cunning fraudsters.
Scammers Pretend to Be Everyone – Even Your Family
Fraudsters are getting craftier, posing as banks, police, delivery firms, utility companies – even friends or family members. They often make contact via urgent calls, texts, emails, or social media messages, demanding money or sensitive info.
Research shows only 51% of people always double-check if a request for cash or info is genuine. Worryingly, younger adults are especially vulnerable, with just 38% of 18-34 year olds staying cautious.
One in Five Fell for Fraud – Could You Be Next?
A shocking 21% of those approached by fake firms have later realised they were targeted by scammers. This risk spikes among 18-34s, with 39% admitting they responded before spotting the con.
“We get real messages from trusted sources every day, making it tough to spot scams,” says Katy Worobec, Managing Director of Economic Crime at UK Finance.
“Scammers constantly change their tactics. That’s why it’s vital to stop, challenge, and protect – following Take Five’s advice.”
Celebrity Jess Robinson Joins the Fight Against Fraud
Jess Robinson, famous for her spot-on impressions on Spitting Image and Britain’s Got Talent, warns even the pros can be fooled.
“Fraudsters use slick tricks. Even as an impressionist, I can’t always tell a scam when I see one. Always verify requests directly – banks and police will never ask for your full PIN or passwords,” Jess explains.
How to Outsmart the Scammers
- STOP: Take a moment before handing over your cash or info. Think twice.
- CHALLENGE: Don’t be rushed or panicked into action. Say no or ignore suspicious requests.
- PROTECT: If you’ve been scammed, contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud.
Remember, criminals spend hours researching you. One slip could cost you dearly. Stay vigilant, stop, challenge, and protect your money now.
