Predator Poses as Police to Kidnap Teen in Crawley
A chilling case in Crawley, Sussex, has highlighted the urgent need for tighter child safety measures. In October 2021, Young approached a 14-year-old schoolgirl, pretending to be a police officer.
Faked Badge and Forced Search
Wearing a yellow hi-vis jacket, Young showed the teenager what looked like a police ID and coerced her into going with him for a fake stop-and-search. He rummaged through her bag, coat, and blazer before letting her go. The frightened girl immediately told her mum, who contacted the police.
Evidence Captured After Bike Crash
The very next day, mum and daughter spotted Young cycling nearby and snapped photos that identified him as the offender. Shortly after, Young crashed into a car and was caught discarding suspicious items, including LED lights, a bag with latex gloves, lubricant, and condoms. Police later seized more evidence from his workplace: a yellow hi-vis jacket, handcuffs, a spray can, a key, and a stab vest.
Guilty Verdict Brings Some Justice
Young pleaded guilty to kidnapping and breaching a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. On Thursday 23 March at Lewes Crown Court, he was found guilty of intending to commit a sexual offence. The Crown Prosecution Service praised the victim’s bravery and hopes the verdict offers some relief to her and her family.
