Police Rescue Puppy Pit-Stop on A689
In the early hours of Saturday, March 18, PCs Liam Vernon and Luke Howie spotted a suspicious scene on the A689 near Bishop Auckland. A man was parked on the grass verge, swinging a sealed carrier bag by the edge of the bank.
The officers spun their car around and pulled up behind the vehicle, lights flashing. The man quickly tossed the bag onto the front seat and started pretending to check his tyre as the officers got out.
Shocking Discovery: Puppies Trapped Inside Bag
As the officers approached, they heard squealing coming from the passenger side. It was the very same bag the man had been swinging. Inside, they found five-day-old Cocker Spaniel puppies – so young their eyes hadn’t even opened yet.
The man, in his 50s, was grilled at the roadside while the officers cared for the tiny pups before rushing them to Wear Referrals Vets for urgent treatment.
Arrest Made as Police Dig Deeper
The driver was arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty, money laundering, and drug trafficking. Though he’s now been released on bail, police investigations continue.
Search teams also executed a warrant at his home, rescuing the mother and father of the puppies. All six pups and their parents are now receiving treatment and will soon be placed in foster care.
PC Vernon: “Right Place, Right Time”
“The puppies were riddled with fleas and if we’d have passed just seconds before, we would have been none the wiser,” said PC Liam Vernon.
“Both myself and Luke are huge dog lovers. This has really stuck with us. We’ve hardly stopped thinking about it but are just glad to have saved them – it really was right place, right time.”
