Fire Destroys London Block Entrance, Sparks Linked to E-Bike Battery
A blazing fire gutted the communal entrance hall of a three-storey residential block in London. It also damaged part of a ground-floor three-room flat.
Firefighters treated a man at the scene before rushing him to hospital via London Ambulance Service.
E-Bike Battery Blamed for Blaze
Officials believe the fire was sparked by a faulty lithium-ion battery from an e-bike.
It’s extremely concerning that incidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters are rising,” a London Fire Brigade spokesperson warned.
“When these batteries and chargers fail, they go off with ferocity. Fires develop fast and can become deadly very quickly.”
“Lithium-ion batteries are prone to failure if paired with the wrong chargers. Converted e-bikes pose serious risks.”
“Most fires involve batteries bought from online marketplaces, which may not meet safety standards.”
Fire Brigade Urges Safe Charging Habits
- Store and charge batteries in safe locations like sheds or garages
- Use smoke detectors where items are charged indoors
- Keep escape routes clear
- Never charge e-bikes or e-scooters while sleeping
- Ensure everyone in the home knows fire safety procedures
“We understand not everyone can charge batteries safely outdoors,” the spokesperson added. “If you must charge inside, please follow our safety advice and stay alert to any issues.”
Rapid Response Quells Early Morning Blaze
The fire brigade was called at 4:50 a.m. Two fire engines and ten firefighters from Deptford and New Cross stations tackled the flames, which were extinguished by 5:31 a.m.
