Fancy shaping your local seas? The MMO is hunting for new voices! The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is on the lookout for fresh general members to join the North Eastern and Kent & Essex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities (IFCAs). There are current vacancies as well as a reserve list for future openings. If you know your patch and care about marine life, this could be your moment.
Volunteers Wanted: Who Can Apply?
The roles are voluntary but vital. Candidates must strike a fair balance between marine conservation and the needs of local users. A solid grip on local IFCA areas is a must. The MMO welcomes both current and former IFCA members, including those nearing or having completed their 10-year terms. Everyone will go through a fair and open competition to keep the team balanced and representative of all sectors.
What Does an IFCA General Member Do?
IFCA members bring local knowledge and experience to manage coastal waters sustainably. You’ll have to juggle the interests of fishermen, conservationists, and other stakeholders. It’s about balancing priorities for the whole district, not pushing just one agenda. Members play a key role in committee meetings, helping to guide the future of inshore fisheries in their region. Although these positions are unpaid, some local councils offer expenses and allowances.
Where Are the Vacancies?
North Eastern IFCA
They’re keen to hear from all sectors with strong local knowledge. Commercial fishermen from Redcar, Hartlepool, and beyond are especially welcome. Those with experience outside shellfisheries and recreational anglers could fill current knowledge gaps on the committee.
Kent & Essex IFCA
Open to anyone eager to get involved in fisheries management. The recreational sector and commercial fishermen experienced with static gear are particularly encouraged to apply, as this expertise is limited right now.
