Brighton and Hove Police Honour Local Heroes in Star-Studded Awards Ceremony
Brighton and Hove’s finest were celebrated in style on Monday, June 6, at Hove’s 1st Central Cricket Ground. The division’s top brass were joined by the Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Councillor Lizzie Deane, and High Sheriff of East Sussex, Jane King, for an awards event recognising officers and staff who’ve gone above and beyond.
Top Brass Praise Officers’ Dedication and Courage
“It’s a privilege to celebrate the dedication, courage, and incredible work of our officers, staff, and volunteers,” said Divisional Commander Justin Burtenshaw. “These nominees have protected the vulnerable, caught criminals, and delivered exceptional service to victims, witnesses, and the community.”
He added, “Behind every award is a team of unsung heroes whose efforts keep our city safe 24/7.”
Detective Inspector Simon Morgan Scoops Three Awards
Detective Inspector Simon Morgan stole the spotlight by bagging three awards – the most on the day. He was recognised for his leadership as Senior Investigating Officer on three major operations:
- Operation Pavilion: Investigating a terrifying kidnapping where a man was dragged from his home, driven around Brighton and threatened. The probe led to two suspects charged with kidnapping, false imprisonment, and aggravated burglary.
- Operation Halifax: Tackling a spike in “needle sticking” attacks by combing through CCTV and gathering evidence that resulted in arrests and a charge. The crackdown helped slash reports and improve safety in Brighton’s nightlife.
- Operation Overstone: Securing a 15-year jail sentence for a man who carried out a brutal acid attack on a woman, despite efforts to hide his identity.
“These investigations demanded teamwork, dedication, and cutting-edge policing,” said Morgan. “Operation Halifax in particular was a complex, national issue requiring collaboration between police, prevention teams, and nightlife venues.”
Officers and PCSOs Go the Extra Mile
- PCs John Mongan and Jordan Goddard were honoured for their quick thinking during a domestic abuse call. They stayed with a hesitant victim and used a Taser to safely arrest an armed suspect who returned to the scene.
- PCSO Sophie Hughes received praise for her sensitive handling of a criminal damage case. She meticulously reviewed CCTV and supported victims throughout a tough investigation.
- The Licensing Team led by Inspector Michelle Palmer-Harris, earned a certificate of merit for their vital role in Operations Halifax and Somerset, working closely with local venues to combat drink spiking and needle sticking, boosting safety on nights out.
- Sergeant Vince Lam was commended for his outstanding leadership and management of police resources during the Covid pandemic.
“Last year’s rise in needle sticking and drink spiking was a huge challenge,” said Kate Hancox from the Licensing Team. “Thanks to new safety measures like taxi marshals, on-site medics, enhanced security, and extensive staff training, Brighton and Hove is a much safer place to enjoy a night out.”

The awards reflected a city-wide commitment to fighting crime and protecting the vulnerable. Brighton and Hove’s police and partners showed that teamwork and determination deliver real results for the community.
