Heathrow Chaos Looms as BA Staff Set to Vote on Summer Strike
Travel hell could soon hit Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport. Hundreds of British Airways check-in and ground staff face voting on a strike that could derail summer getaways. The GMB union has launched a strike ballot over a bitter pay dispute sparked by Covid-era cuts.
BA Staff Slammed with Pay Cut During Pandemic
The row centres on a 10% pay cut handed to Heathrow workers during the pandemic. While other BA staff pocketed a 10% bonus and bosses had theirs restored, frontline workers were left high and dry.
“These devoted employees have endured horrific abuse while keeping passengers moving during a period when staff shortages and IT failures nearly brought the airport to a halt,” said Nadine Houghton, GMB National Officer.
“Bosses have it back, other workers have it back, so why not these devoted Heathrow employees?”
“If BA wants to avoid industrial action, which could disrupt many summer vacations, they must provide it.”
Strike Vote Decision Due June 23
The ballot closes on June 23, with the union expecting a strike call the same day. A walkout would pile on top of existing airport delays, passport backlogs, and staff shortages – making summer travel a nightmare for passengers.
With tensions soaring and holidaymakers on edge, BA faces a tough choice: meet workers’ demands or risk chaos on the tarmac.
