Off-Duty Cop Snags Drunk Driver Slumped Behind Wheel in Canterbury

An off-duty police officer’s sharp eye stopped a potential disaster in Canterbury on Monday afternoon.

The officer spotted a man dozing behind the wheel of a running transit van in The Street, Bishopsbourne, just before 4pm on 6 December 2021. The keys were in the ignition, but the driver wasn’t awake.

Quick Call Leads to Arrest

The off-duty cop immediately alerted on-duty colleagues, who arrived quickly and gave the man a breath test.

  • Driver, a man in his forties from Gillingham, was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.
  • He also faces charges over cultivating cannabis.

Weed Farm Link Revealed

The cannabis charge ties back to an April incident when police attended a fire report at a property on Mote Road, Maidstone.

Fire investigators discovered over 80 cannabis plants growing at the address.
