Ex-Cambridge Student Jailed Over Explosive Recipe Book
Oliver Bel, a former Cambridge University student, has been locked up for two years at Manchester Crown Court. The 24-year-old from Wilmslow was found guilty of possessing documents likely to aid terrorism under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
Police Snare After Extremist Online Posts
Bel first raised alarm bells in early 2019 when his social media spewed anti-Semitic and extreme right-wing views. Following complaints, police launched a probe into his activities while he was still at Cambridge.
In November 2019, cops raided Bel’s home after extremist posts of his were featured in a ‘Hope not Hate’ news article. The search uncovered media devices and books, including the infamous Anarchist Cookbook.
Explosive Instructions Found, Man Denies Charges
Experts found the cookbook contained detailed how-tos on making bombs and stabbing victims. Bel was arrested in January 2020 by Counter Terrorism Policing North West. During questioning, he denied all charges but was hit with an official terrorism-related possession charge in April 2020.
Strong Message from Counter-Terror Chiefs
“Although Bel pleaded not guilty, the evidence was clear,” said Superintendent Will Chatterton.
“This conviction proves our commitment to rooting out dangerous terrorist threats. We urge the public to report suspicious behaviour immediately. Reporting won’t ruin lives, but it could save them.”
