Woman Jailed for Grooming and Sex Assault of Child in Derby
Debbie Yates, 38, has been convicted of multiple sex offences against a child under 13. The Derby woman was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault, two counts of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and one count of child abduction.
Jury Delivers Verdict After Two-Week Trial
The shocking crimes occurred in 2017 while Yates and the victim were both living in Derby. She reportedly befriended the young boy, groomed him quickly, and persuaded him to skip school to meet her in a field, where some of the abuse took place.
Detective Praises Boy’s Courage
“The young victim showed immense bravery throughout, both in coming forward and for telling the court what had happened to him,” said Detective Constable Claire McKeown.
“I hope this sentence will be a step towards him moving forward with his life and finding closure. I urge anyone affected by this type of crime to come forward – we believe you and will support you. If you suspect someone is acting inappropriately around a child, speak out. You could protect a vulnerable youngster.”
