£56 Million Overhaul of Birmingham University Station Set to Transform Travel Ahead of Commonwealth Games
Birmingham’s University station is getting a major facelift just in time for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris announced a whopping £12 million government boost today (22 July 2020), kicking off a £56 million upgrade to ease the crush, turbocharge the local economy, and make journeys smoother for nearly 4 million passengers a year.
Massive Upgrade to Handle Exploding Passenger Numbers
Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is teaming up with the University of Birmingham, Birmingham City Council, Network Rail, West Midlands Trains, and the Greater Birmingham and Solihull Local Enterprise Partnership to overhaul the station. The revamped hub will be bigger and better, featuring extra lifts, a proper ticket office, a shop, and public toilets – all designed to welcome sports fans and athletes in style.
University station opened in 1978 to serve just 500,000 passengers a year. Fast forward four decades and it’s pushed close to 4 million, with demand still climbing.
Game-Changing Investment Backed by Govt and Local Leaders
Chris Heaton-Harris, Rail Minister, said: “Birmingham is gearing up to welcome Commonwealth athletes and fans from across the globe. We’re delivering a station that’s a proper gateway to the Games. Long after the athletes have gone, the station will continue to provide better connections, making journeys easier and more reliable.”
Andy Street, West Midlands Mayor, said: “This funding is a huge step forward for a new University station that our booming campus and hospital needs. It’s no secret this station is outgrowing itself, and this investment helps us build a modern transport hub ready for 2022.”
Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council, commented: “This station won’t just be a stunning welcome for Commonwealth visitors but a better experience for daily passengers. Getting more people on trains is crucial to cutting congestion, improving air quality, and pushing towards a zero-carbon future.”
Work to Start This Autumn – Ready for the 2022 Commonwealth Games
Contracts for design and construction will be awarded this summer, with work kicking off in autumn 2020. The upgraded station will be fully operational for the Games, promising smooth arrivals and departures for thousands of visitors.
The announcement aligns with broader plans to modernise rail services, including rolling out digital signalling across key routes like the West Coast and Midland Main Lines from 2026. Plus, £12 million will fit out 33 new Midland Main Line trains with cutting-edge signalling tech.
Accessibility will also get a boost, with millions going to stations across the Midlands – including Retford, Ludlow, Smethwick Rolfe Street, Wellington, Narborough, Lichfield Trent Valley, and Wolverhampton – to install step-free access and other disability-friendly upgrades. All projects are set to wrap up by 2024.
