Driver Denies Dangerous Crash That Injured Two Over-60s on Isle of Wight

Joshua Johnson faced Isle of Wight Crown Court this morning (Monday, February 10). The 26-year-old is charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving under the influence of drugs — charges he firmly denies.

Serious Crash at Chessell Crossroads

Johnson, from Gunville Road, appeared before His Honour Judge R Hetherington, the Honorary Recorder of Portsmouth. He is accused of causing serious injuries to two people in their sixties following a crash on Middle Road near Calbourne on May 28, 2018.

The incident involved Johnson’s Honda Civic colliding dangerously with a Toyota Yaris at Chessell crossroads. The crash was so severe that the Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance was called to airlift one of the injured to a mainland hospital.

Man Denies Drug Driving Charge

Johnson also faces a separate charge of driving a vehicle with a specified controlled drug over the legal limit. He formally pleaded not guilty to both charges during the pretrial hearing, while dressed smartly in a shirt and black trousers.

Trial Date Set for June

The court confirmed a five-day trial is scheduled to begin on June 24 this year. Johnson remains free while the case progresses through the Isle of Wight Crown Court.
