Fifteen firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are battling a blaze at Parkhurst Forest in Newport this morning (Tuesday). The fire is burning through undergrowth covering an area roughly 30 by 50 metres, close to the old Camp Hill prison site.

Massive Fire Response in Action

Fire crews rushed to the scene just before 8am, with two engines dispatched from Newport, one from Ryde, plus a 4×4 Land Rover and a water carrier. At the peak of the response, they had three appliances, another water carrier from Freshwater, a support unit from East Cowes, and additional Land Rover support from Ryde on site.

Cause Unknown as Firefighters Dig In

Justin Harden, Group Manager for Hampshire Fire and Rescue, confirmed the fire’s cause is still unknown. Crews are expected to stay for hours, digging out undergrowth to fully extinguish the flames and prevent any flare-ups.
