Soldier Talks Down After Dramatic A2 Bridge Standoff

Specialist police officers pulled off a tense rescue early Tuesday after a serving soldier threatened to jump from a footbridge over the A2. The entire stretch of the busy road was shut for nearly four hours, causing chaos for commuters.

Man Climbs Footbridge, Cuts Wrists

Emergency services raced to the scene just after midnight following reports of a man in distress. The soldier was seen perched atop the footbridge at Buckingham Avenue, having cut his wrists. Eyewitnesses described a nerve-wracking standoff as police negotiators tried to coax him down.

A2 Shut Down, Traffic Gridlocked

  • The Met Police closed the A2 in both directions between East Rochester Way and Buckingham Avenue.
  • Traffic backed up for miles as officers scrambled to keep stranded drivers safe.
  • Officers used an on-slip road to turn vehicles around and ease the jams.

High-Stakes Negotiation Ends in Safety

Specialist negotiators spent hours talking the soldier down from the bridge. Relief came around 3.30am when he finally stepped back to safety. Paramedics treated his injuries at the scene and he is now receiving ongoing support.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “The A2 was closed in both directions after we received concerns for the welfare of a man. The situation is now being dealt with by specially trained officers. We thank motorists for their understanding.”

Additional Risks During Incident

Police were also dealing with a separate concern after a stolen motorbike was chased along the route. Officers feared the pursuit could endanger the trapped motorists caught up in the closure.

The A2 reopened shortly after 3.30am, bringing an end to the early-morning drama that involved multiple police units, paramedics, and London Ambulance Service HART teams.
