A major rescue operation sprung into action today after an explosion aboard a dredging vessel south of Dodman Point, Cornwall.

Compressed Air Cylinder Blast Injures Two

Just before 1pm, the UK Coastguard received an urgent call reporting an explosion on the vessel. Authorities believe a compressed air cylinder exploded, injuring two of the three crew members on board.

The helicopter crew—Captain Darren Manswer, Co-Pilot Ivan Hamilton, Winch Operator Andy Batchelor, and Winchman Paramedic Carlton Real—praised the teamwork with the Fisheries Protection vessel and Falmouth RNLI. “Their help was vital and a brilliant example of inter-agency cooperation,” said the rescue team.

Royal Navy and Lifeboats Secure the Damaged Vessel

A Royal Navy Fleet Auxiliary ship and a Fishery Protection vessel are also assisting. Meanwhile, the Fowey All Weather Lifeboat has secured a tow on the still seaworthy vessel, which poses no fire risk. Falmouth Lifeboat will take over the tow after bringing the uninjured man ashore.

Marine Accident Investigation Branch Launches Probe

The Marine Accident Investigation Branch has been notified and is set to investigate the explosion.

The UK Coastguard has wished those injured a swift recovery as the rescue operation continues.
