First Look: Woman Arrested After Car Hits Muslims Leaving Eid Prayers in Newcastle

A 42-year-old woman has been arrested after driving into a group of Muslims outside a Newcastle sports centre, injuring six people including three children. The collision happened just as worshippers were leaving Newcastle Central Mosque following Eid prayers.

Not a Terror Attack, Say Police

Despite early fears of a terror incident, Northumbria Police confirmed the crash is “not believed to be a terror incident.” The scene echoed recent attacks like the Finsbury Park tragedy, causing alarm in the community. The injured—three adults and three children—were rushed to the Royal Victoria Infirmary just before 9:15am.

Chaos Outside Westgate Sports Centre

Newcastle Central Mosque released a statement describing the shock and swift response:

“Immediately after the Eid prayers, when people were starting to leave the venue, a car collided with pedestrians. The injured were immediately attended to by emergency medical services and the police. All the injured have been taken to hospital. We pray and hope that all those affected recover fully soon.”

The emergency response was massive and rapid. Six ambulances, two paramedic rapid response vehicles, an air ambulance, three ambulance officers, four hazardous area response team vehicles, and two trauma cars were dispatched to the scene. Volunteers from the mosque helped clear the area quickly, preventing further delays in treatment.

Ongoing Investigation as Woman Held in Custody

Northumbria Police continue inquiries into the incident. A spokesperson said:

“Police inquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what happened but, at this time, it is not believed to be a terror incident. Police have arrested a 42-year-old woman who is currently in police custody.”

The community remains shaken but relieved emergency services acted swiftly to aid the injured victims in the aftermath of this startling crash.
