£250K Police Car Pile-Up After High-Speed M27 Chase
Four Police Vehicles Written Off in Early Morning Smash
Chaos erupted on the M27 in Hampshire just after 2am Sunday as a dramatic police chase ended in disaster. Four police cars, including three BMW X5s and a BMW 530, were wrecked during a high-speed pursuit of an uninsured black Honda Accord between junction 1 and 2 eastbound.
Each BMW X5 is valued at around £50,000, while the BMW 530 costs over £40,000. The smash left one X5 stranded on the central reservation, missing its rear axle, while another X5 and the 530 boxed in the Honda. A fifth X5 was found on the hard shoulder, also missing its rear axle. Fragments of the police vehicles, including wheels, littered the motorway.
Suspects Arrested, Hospital Checks Underway
Multiple people have been arrested following the chase. It remains unclear if those injured and taken to hospital are officers or occupants of the uninsured Honda. Armed police attended the scene, but no weapons were reportedly drawn.
The Honda driver, a 58-year-old man, faces charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving under the influence of alcohol. He is currently being checked at berkshire999.co.uk/entity/southampton-general-hospital/" title="Southampton General Hospital" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton General Hospital.
Major Road Closure Causes Traffic Chaos
The eastbound carriageway between junctions 1 and 2 remains closed through the morning, with traffic diverted via Totton towards Southampton. Highways England warns the road won’t reopen before midday.
A red Peugeot was also hit during a police attempt to block the Honda. Despite the carnage, thankfully no serious injuries have been reported.
Probe Underway as Police Review Pursuit
An investigation at the crash site is ongoing and expected to continue for most of the morning. The incident will be reviewed by Police Professional Standards as per protocol.
