Massive Blaze at Ocado Andover Warehouse Rages On
Firefighters are battling through the night at the Ocado CFC site in Andover. The evacuation zone stays firmly in place as crews work to remove toxic chemicals and control the fire.
Toxic Threat and Spread of Fire
Despite dreadful weather, more than 300 firefighters are on the scene, battling flames that have now spread to another part of the building. Fuel in the fire’s path is being removed to contain the blaze.
Officials fear a large cylinder containing refrigerant gas could explode, adding to the danger. Fire chiefs have held command meetings to plan the next moves.
Evacuation Zone and Community Impact
A 500-metre exclusion zone covers streets including Bailey Close, Mundy Road, Adams Road, Ox Drove, Strapp Road, Chaplin Way, Erington Road, and Walworth Road. Residents here have been visited by emergency services regarding evacuation.
Harrow Way Community School is serving as a rest centre. However, by 6:52am, Hampshire County Council announced the rest centre is being stood down as evacuees have been moved to hotels or are staying with friends and family.
Damage, Road Closures, and Ongoing Efforts
The fire, which began in the “ambient grid” where Ocado’s robots operate, has caused substantial damage. Part of the roof has collapsed.
Northway remains closed while hazardous chemicals are removed. The A303 is also closed due to the incident.
Chief Fire Officer Neil Odin warned the fire crews will likely be on site for weeks as they continue to tackle the blaze.
More updates to follow as the situation unfolds.
