A Brighton man, Shaun Shirley, 65, has been sentenced to three years and nine months in prison at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 2 June for a string of distraction burglaries targeting vulnerable residents in Brighton and Hove.
Sussex Police launched an investigation into Shirley’s crimes, where he tricked victims into letting him into their homes under false pretences before stealing valuables.
Distraction Burglaries Uncovered
Shirley used deceitful methods to gain entry to his victims’ properties. On 26 April, posing as a window cleaner at a flat in Rose Hill Terrace, Brighton, he claimed he needed to close the windows. He left the address with jewellery and cash belonging to the occupant.
Just three days later, on 29 April, Shirley targeted another home in Wilbury Road, Hove. Pretending he was erecting scaffolding, he entered the bedroom under the guise of moving plants and stole a handbag containing cash.
Extensive Criminal Past
Detective Constable James Botting labelled Shirley a “prolific criminal” with 30 previous convictions for 89 offences, including burglary, theft, and fraud.
“He has preyed on vulnerable people, entering their homes on the pretence of helping them but his only aim was to steal from them,” said DC Botting.
Police Crackdown On Doorstep Crime
Sussex Police emphasised this sentencing as part of wider efforts to tackle distraction burglaries and protect vulnerable communities.
DC Botting added, “Justice has been done and we will continue to identify, target and catch those criminals who commit such crimes.”
Community Warning
The force urges residents to remain cautious of unexpected visitors and report any suspicious activity to help prevent similar crimes in the future.
